ChatGPT 2026: Still the Default, But No Longer the Only AI Worth Your Money
Rapid feature expansion and a new $100 tier cement dominance—yet writing rivals and billing complaints prevent a perfect score.

ChatGPT offers six tiers in 2026: Free ($0/mo), Go ($8/mo), Plus ($20/mo), Pro ($200/mo), Business ($25/user/mo), and Enterprise (custom). The standout story is Plus: Plus at $20/month is genuinely one of the better value propositions in the AI subscription market right now. The price hasn't moved in three years while the product has expanded significantly.
For power users, ChatGPT now has two tiers that both display "Pro" in your account: one at $100 a month and one at $200. They are separate plans, not the same plan billed two ways. OpenAI added the $100 tier on April 9, 2026, to fill the awkward gap between $20 Plus and $200 Pro. Business tiers carry $20 per seat per month billed annually, or $25 per seat per month billed monthly, after an April 2026 price cut.

On 3 September 2026, OpenAI released GPT-6 Astra — officially the successor to GPT-5.6 Sol — calling it "the world's most intelligent and aligned model." The headline gains are agentic, not just conversational: 72.6% on the OSWorld 2.0 computer-use benchmark at roughly 40 minutes per task, versus 65.7% at about 75 minutes for GPT-5.6 Sol — a better score in roughly 47% less time.
GPT-6 Astra is included in Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise at no extra sticker price, rolling out in waves. The new capability anchor is ChatGPT Work, an agentic workspace built right into ChatGPT that can execute tasks across different applications and files. It breaks down complex projects into bite-sized steps and runs independently — even if a task takes hours to complete.
ChatGPT can read documents, browse the web, control your computer, generate images, transcribe and synthesize speech, run Python in a sandbox, remember things across conversations, group related work into Projects, schedule tasks, and host user-built Custom GPTs. ChatGPT integrates DALL-E 3 for image generation directly in the conversation. Unlike using DALL-E separately, the conversational interface lets you iterate: describe what you want, see the result, then refine it through follow-up messages rather than completely restarting. The quality in 2026 is substantially better than early DALL-E for realistic scenes, illustrations, product mockups, and concept visualization.
One notable gap: Sora video generation, OpenAI's flagship video model, was discontinued on April 26, 2026.
At consumer scale ChatGPT is overwhelmingly liked — around 4.8/5 across millions of app-store ratings and strong business-software scores (G2 ~4.7, Capterra 4.4, TrustRadius 9.1/10) — yet Trustpilot sits near 1.6/5, a gap aggregators attribute to selection bias rather than product quality. Business users evaluating ChatGPT as a productivity tool consistently report high satisfaction. Consumers encountering billing disputes, support failures, or model quality regressions flood complaint-driven platforms with grievances.
The platform maintains 96% ease-of-use satisfaction on G2, while Capterra rates Ease of Use 4.7/5. However, Claude won most writing rounds and free users' conversations are used for training by default with manual opt-out required.
Plus includes the GPT-5.6 model family and, at last published guidance, roughly 160 messages per three hours, 10 full plus 15 lightweight Deep Research tasks a month, Agent mode, image and voice tools, and custom GPTs. The $100 Pro tier aims at developers who kept hitting Plus caps but could not justify $200, offering roughly 5× usage at half the previous premium price.
For teams, conversations are excluded from model training by default on Business plans, a contractual guarantee unavailable at any individual tier price. Teams under roughly 20-30 seats usually land on Business; larger orgs with compliance requirements typically get pushed to an Enterprise quote regardless of headcount.
ChatGPT lost roughly 25 percentage points of market share in the past 12 months as Google Gemini surged from 8% to 15%, and Claude quietly grew 14% quarter-over-quarter. The product that invented the AI chatbot category is now fighting to stay #1. ChatGPT still has 200 million+ weekly active users and 60.7% market share in the generative AI chatbot space as of February 2026. It's the default AI — the one people mean when they say "I asked AI."
